You will notice that one diagram is for sharps (#) and the other is for flats (b). Sharp means higher and flat means lower when refering to pitch.

The note in between C and D could be called C# as it is higher than C or Db because it is lower than D. When referring to a note by itself you can use either name but when you are discussing a note in relation to the key that it belongs to you should name it accordingly. For example, in the key of E this same note would be called C# because E contains sharps but in the key of Ab it would be Db because Ab contains flats.

To see which keys contain sharps or flats refer to the section on the Circle of 5ths.
