Fretted Bass

Vibrato is the effect of a fast wavering note which makes for a more emotive sound, particularly in ballads. Vibrato is produced on fretted instruments by moving the string sideways like a series of small bends. It is important that the string is moved quickly or it will produce a slow, wavering sound instead. This video also contains hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides.

Fretless Bass

On a fretless bass, violin, double bass, viola and cello, vibrato is obtained by moving the fingers quickly up and down the neck instead of sideways. On fretted instruments the effect of this sideways movement is very subtle.
