Hammer-ons are notes which are produced by the left hand hitting the fretted noted without the need for it to be played with the right hand. This should be done firmly for the note to have comparable volume to a normal note. A hammer on must be a fretted note but the note which precedes it may be either fretted or an open string.

As the focus of hammer-ons is the left hand note, the preceding note may be slapped or played normally. Hammer ons are a technique in their own right but they are also a component of the finger-tapping technique.

Hammer-ons are notated with a slur (curved line) and the letter H.

In this video the open strings are played with the right hand and the 2nd and 3rd notes of each triplet are hammered-on.
