The tried-and-tested method for left-hand finger application is to use four fingers in the space of three semitones up to, but not including, the octave (the middle) of each string. Even for the vast majority of players with large hands and/or long fingers this method has proved to be the best.

On the left-hand side of the octave, fingers one, two and four are used. The third finger rests between the second and fourth when playing/stopping a note with the fourth finger.

First, hold your left hand as if gripping an orange. Note how all fingers are arched/curved at all joints. This hand position is now transferred to the fingerboard and neck.

The thumb rests on its pad at the back of the neck.

The wrist/arm is at a right angle to the neck.

When moving across the fingerboard, pivot on the thumb pad, maintaining the same axis between the thumb and the other fingers.
