Acoustic BassThese exercises will enable you to achieve rhythmic accuracy through getting a feel for string spacing, string thickness and string tension. Mute all strings with the left-hand fingers and apply any of the right-hand techniques. I recommend, however, starting with the rest-stroke techniques. This muting produces a thud-like sound unmasked by pitches, therefore making it easier to primarily focus on rhythm. Start the muted exercises very slowly and pay particular attention to even rhythm as well as consistent sound and volume on all strings. Repeat each exercise as often as necessary. Example 1
Example 1 uses even quarter notes. Example 2
Example 2 incorporates subdivision into even eighth notes. Example 3
Example 3 incorporates subdivisions of eighth-note triplets which is the basis for a swing feel. Example 4
Example 4 incorporates subdivisions of even eighths, even sixteenths and eighth-note triplets. Do this exercise on all strings. Example 5
Example 5 is rhythmically identical to Ex 4 but crosses to adjacent strings for each new subdivision. Now make up your own permutations of Examples 1 - 5. Include string jumps in odd places and in the middle of a subdivided sequence. The possibilities are endless. Experiment!
