There are two distinctly different types of bow - French and German - with a variety of right-hand grips.
French

German

The French bow has a smaller frog than the German bow and is gripped from above the stick (overstick grip), whereas the German bow has a higher frog and is gripped from beneath the stick (understick grip). Each bowing style has its specific advantages over others. Experiment!
General Guidelines for Bowing
- The amount of bow hair on the string and the angle of the bow hair to the string is governed by the grip style (French, Austrian, German) and the string being bowed. A general guideline is to keep the right-hand wrist reasonably straight.
- Always attempt to bow at a right angle to each string. This ensures the most even sound quality.
- Position the bow approximately halfway between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge.
- Keep the bowing arm loosely straight, neither stiff nor bent at the elbow.
- Ensure there is sufficient rosin on the bow to produce a strong, non-squeaky tone.
- Always release the bow tension (with the screw at the frog end) after each playing session.
